launch a new initiative to empower and protect women and girls in the countries in the northern part of Central America. With a commitment of $10 million over the next 4 years, Canada will work with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to assist women and girls affected by irregular migration and forced displacement in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
The project will provide support to the women and girls in countries with the most urgent and high-impact requirements identified in the Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework (known as MIRPS) national priorities. It is expected to help improve living conditions and protection mechanisms for some 5,000 women and girls.
The countries include Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Mexico.
